The Philadelphia Phillies could very well attempt a blockbuster trade this summer. Whether it occurs at the deadline or sooner, Philadelphia is poised to make another deep postseason run and should go all-in for more firepower to match the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres.
Divisional rivals Atlanta Braves are off to a slow start and should rebound, but if these first couple of weeks are any indicator, the National League East could be a two-horse race between the Phillies and the New York Mets.
A recent trade idea proposed during a live stream by Bleacher Report’s Tyler Ward sees Philadelphia sending third baseman Alec Bohm and outfielder Brandon Marsh to the Chicago White Sox for outfielder Luis Robert Jr.
Let’s start with Robert Jr., the 27-year-old Cuban who has been one of the last shining stars on the gloomy White Sox. His career 162-game averages of 30 home runs, 84 RBIs, a .266 batting average, a .786 OPS, and a 116 OPS+.
Robert Jr. may not be as good a defender as Marsh, but he still has excellent range and a powerful arm. Marsh is underrated at the plate, with a .267 batting average, a .788 OPS, a 118 OPS+, and a bit of pop after joining the team midway through 2022.
Yes, he has been surrounded by a much better and deeper lineup, but Robert Jr. is not so significant a player that sacrificing Marsh and the reliable Bohm would be worth it. Robert Jr. also has serious durability concerns, having played in 100 games just twice (100 in 2024, 145 in 2023).
Should Philadelphia be on the lookout for top-tier talent? Absolutely. Would Robert Jr. bring juice to an organization already filled with high-profile players? Also yes. However, this feels like a steep price, and the timeline does not add up for Chicago.
Marsh and Bohm would now be players, but the White Sox are at least a few years away from being competitive. It would make more sense for them to hunt a pool of prospects rather than a pair of veterans.
