The Dallas Cowboys have reportedly discussed a contract extension with linebacker Micah Parsons to make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.
Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones discussed the contract extension on Tuesday and said he has “spent five, six hours” meeting with Parsons to review a contract, with large portions already agreed upon.
“Most of the issues, we’re in agreement on. I’ve discussed it all. We obviously don’t have an agreement relative to a new contract. Micah’s under contract. We’ll see how it goes. It’s not uncommon for me to visit directly with players. In this particular case, that’s the way I’m doing it,” said Jones, per NFL.com.
These comments came shortly after news broke that the Cowboys had offered Parsons a contract that would make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL.
However, no agreement has been reached between the two sides after Dallas opted against talking with Parsons’ agent, David Mulugheta, about the contract details , per NBC Sports.
Jones seemingly took a shot at Mulugheta later in the day, saying that Parsons’ agent “is not a concern here,” and he does not even know his name, according to Clarence Hill Jr. of All City DLLS.
Parsons took to social media shortly after these comments and defended his agent.
Facts!! David is the best and I will not be doing any deal without @DavidMulugheta involved! Like anyone with good sense I hired experts for a reason. There is no one I trust more when it comes to negotiating contracts than David! There will be no backdoors in this contract… https://t.co/nxKNSIXLvt

Despite the somewhat concerning process between Jones and Mulugheta, the two sides are still expected to reach an agreement that will pay Parsons more than $40 million per season.
Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network said there is “no doubt” that Parsons will receive the largest contract ever for a non-quarterback and that both sides are comfortable waiting for more information about eventual deals around the league.
Although many Cowboys fans would prefer that the franchise comes to an agreement quickly, Jones said he does not “view it as urgent at all” and would prefer to get the best deal.
“Some say using the basis that the earlier you get something done the cheaper, well the earlier you get something done, a lot of times the more mistakes you make. You might want to see a few more cards play, not just with that particular negotiation, but with the whole team,” he explained, per Cowboys.com.
“I know I’m kind of being a little defensive here, but the idea that the only success is getting a contract done at an early time is incorrect, I’d rather pay more and get it right than I had pay less and screw it up.”
