REPORT: Green Bay Packers HC Matt LaFleur Gets Brutally Honest on Aaron Rodgers Potentially Signing with Vikings

There is no question that Aaron Rodgers is one of the greatest players in the history of the Green Bay Packers, and the NFL in general.

But while he will, one day, end his playing career with a ceremonial one-day contract so that he can retire a member of the organization that drafted him, the four-time NFL MVP is currently weighing his options for 2025.

And while it is expected that Rodgers will play for the Pittsburgh Steelers next season, if he plays at all, there were previous rumblings that he wanted to sign with the Minnesota Vikings.

The Vikings, of course, allowed Pro Bowl quarterback Sam Darnold to leave in free agency. In his place, they have 2024 tenth overall pick JJ McCarthy, who missed all of his rookie season with a torn ACL.

The Minnesota Vikings Currently Do Not Plan to Sign Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Aaron Rodgers

When the Packers traded Rodgers to the New York Jets prior to the 2023 NFL season, many joked that he could follow Brett Favre’s career path and end up playing with the Vikings.

And when New York released Rodgers earlier this offseason, it seemed like a real possibility. After all, McCarthy is coming off of a torn ACL and has not played in an NFL game.

But even though Rodgers made it known that Minnesota was the team that he most wanted to play for, the Vikings informed him that they would not be pursuing him at this time.

Still, if the four-time NFL MVP drags his feet long enough, he could remained unsigned by the Steelers long enough for Minnesota to potentially realize that McCarthy is not ready. And if that is the case, they could give him a call this spring.

During his media session at the NFL owners meetings on Tuesday, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur was asked about the possibility of Rodgers joining Green Bay’s fierce NFC North rival.

“It would be a hell of a story, wouldn’t it?” LaFleur said, per Sports Illustrated.

“There’s great players on every team, so if it works out, it works out. It’s not something that I’m going to sit there and constantly think about. Sure, you think about it the week of when you’re playing somebody. But if it works out, great for them.”

Clearly, Rodgers heading to the Vikings is not something LaFleur is giving much thought to. Indeed, it seems highly unlikely to happen anyway,
