Dak Prescott Injury History Enough For Cowboys ‘Panic’ At QB?

Dak Prescott's future with the Dallas Cowboys takes a new path that may anger fans | Marca

The Dallas Cowboys last offseason showed how much they believe in Dak Prescott by giving him a monster four-year, $240 million extension, but No. 4 only played eight games before tearing his hamstring off the bone to end his year.

That left Cooper Rush to keep the franchise’s head above water, however, mistakes ended up seeing Dallas miss the playoffs, with Trey Lance getting the start in Week 18 against the Washington Commanders.

But looking ahead to the quarterback room in 2025, it isn’t ideal. A rehabbing Dak, and Will Grier…that’s it.

Trey Lance is a free agent, and Rush is a Baltimore Raven. That, along with Prescott’s injury history, has Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton having the Cowboys’ panic level, on a scale of one to 10, with one being no panic, at a six.

“The Dallas Cowboys have their franchise quarterback, but he’s in a suboptimal situation with his recent injury history,” Moten writes. “Over the last three years, he has missed 14 games because of injuries. The Cowboys don’t have a solid backup behind him. They lost Cooper Rush to the Baltimore Ravens in free agency. Grier has started in two games over five seasons. For now, though, Prescott’s shaky durability and the lack of quality depth behind him are reasons to be concerned about the quarterback situation in Dallas.”

It is a little startling that Prescott has only played two full seasons in his last five years, and both times Dallas won 11+ games. So the secret is keeping Dak healthy.

But behind him, in Grier, who did show something in preseason in 2023, that doesn’t instill the same “confidence” as Rush did, and there is every chance the Cowboys draft a quarterback too (hello, Mr. Ewers).

However, it all lands at the feet of Dak. If he is healthy for the entire season, the Cowboys are in business. Who knows how the year could pan out if he isn’t?

Is that reason enough to panic? Or do we have faith that Prescott in Brian Schottenheimer’s offense can play a full 17-game season?
