The New England Patriots have made plenty of big signings this offseason, but few were as impactful as Stefon Diggs. The former All-Pro receiver agreed to a three-year, $69 million contract with $26 million guaranteed this week and gives New England the weapon it desperately needs after relying on Demario Douglas and Kayshon Boutte as their top receivers last year.
But while money and targets were two big reasons why Diggs came to Foxborough, there was another factor. It turns out a family member of a coach on the Patriots staff played a big role in helping Diggs land in New England and it could be a beneficial relationship that gets Drake Maye and the rest of the offense on track.
Josh McDaniels’s Brother Helped Stefon Diggs Find His Way to Patriots
Diggs revealed on Friday that Houston Texans wide receiver coach Ben McDaniels helped the 31-year-old find his way to the Patriots. The two worked together during Diggs’ lone season in Houston and he would ask McDaniels about his brother Josh, who was at the time out of football after spending two seasons as the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.
“It’s crazy because I asked his brother questions prior to me getting here,” Diggs told reporters during his introductory press conference. “I would ask him, ‘How is your brother and X,Y,Z?’ Just keeping it real. It was like a get to know you process because you spend a lot of time with your receiver coach. He always told me about him, that he took some time off and X,Y, Z.”
As fate would have it, Josh McDaniels would wind up becoming the Patriots offensive coordinator when Mike Vrabel was hired last January. While Diggs said he doesn’t feel like he has a jump-start on learning the offense, he’s optimistic about what he can do in McDaniels’s scheme.
“I don’t feel like I’ve got a jump-start because he doesn’t use the same terminology or language but football is football. I’m committed to the study and the tedious part of it. Nobody wants to do it but you get used to doing it if you love football. If you love it enough, you’ll dedicate your time and your effort. So for me, I’ll figure it out whatever it is.”
Diggs is hoping that McDaniels can bring the best out of him in New England. Before last season, Diggs had six straight 1,000 yard seasons and had a chance at another one until he tore his ACL playing in Houston last year. With a healthy opinion of Maye and a budding relationship with Vrabel, Diggs will hope to get back on track next season.
