The New England Patriots tried overhauling their offense through the 2024 NFL Draft, using their first five selections on offensive players.
While quarterback Drake Maye emerged as a franchise-caliber player, there were significant issues for his peers from the Patriots’ draft class.
New England used the 37th overall pick on wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk and the 68th overall pick on offensive lineman Caedan Wallace.
After that, the team used a pair of fourth-round picks on wideout Javon Baker (110th overall) and lineman Layden Robinson (103rd overall).
Polk finished the season with the second-highest drop rate (12.1 percent) and the fourth-lowest quarterback rating (52.5) when targeted.
Baker appeared in 11 games, drawing just 4 total targets and playing only 12 percent of the team’s offensive snaps.
What made Polk’s issues worse was how he compared to fellow rookie wide receiver Ladd McConkey.
New England traded down from the 34th overall pick, allowing the Los Angeles Chargers. McConkey finished his rookie season with 82 receptions for 1,149 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns with a 123.0 QB rating when targeted and a 4.5 percent drop rate. While drops were an issue for Polk, Baker had even bigger problems.

Senior NFL reporter Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports shared on Friday’s episode of Inside Coverage that while the Patriots think Polk could still reasonably improve, Baker is more of a question due to issues he had with his professionalism as a rookie.
“Ja’Lynn Polk was a mess dropping passes. Javon Baker, from what I was told, didn’t know how to be a professional athlete…You basically have two receivers for the Patriots that need somebody in the room who can show them how to do it…I do think the Patriots, particularly when it comes to Polk, Polk can have a hard reset under the new staff. They think there is still an ability to salvage Polk. I don’t know about Baker. I think there’s certainly people inside that building that are like, ‘He’s just gotta get it. We don’t know if he’s ever going to get it. Maybe he will, maybe he won’t.”

Under new Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel, the team is looking for players who fit the team-wide culture that existed during one of the best NFL dynasties ever.
New England is emphasizing “tough-minded” and “resilient” players who put the team first and have a strong work ethic.
It might be part of the reason why Pol is receiving a fresh start from this Patriots coaching staff and there’s hope that being mentored by Stefon Diggs will pay off.
However, there is evidently far more uncertainty about whether or not Baker has the mindset needed to stick around in the NFL.
If New England already has concerns about him right now, it’s very possible that Baker’s replacement is taken early in the 2025 NFL Draft.
