The Green Bay Packers had a relatively tame free agency. Their more notable signings were wide receiver Mecole Hardman and offensive guard Aaron Banks.
On Friday, the Packers announced they were bringing back linebacker Kristian Welch to the offseason roster.
Via the Packers:
“Welch returns to the Packers after spending last season with the Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens. After joining the Packers’ practice squad prior to the 2023 regular season he was elevated to the active roster on Sept. 28 and appeared in 12 regular-season games and both postseason contests for Green Bay.”
Welch is from Iola, Wisconsin. The six-foot-three, 240-pound athlete played high school football for Iola-Scandinavia before playing four years at Iowa.
The Baltimore Ravens signed Welch as an undrafted free agent in 2020. He stayed with the Ravens for three seasons before signing with the Packers in 2023. He re-signed with the Packers in March of 2024 but was released after training camp.
Why the Green Bay Packers signed Kristian Welch

The Packers signed Welch in the hopes he can make the 53-man roster as a special teams contributor. In 2023, he appeared in 14 games for Green Bay, recording six tackles, the third-most coverage tackles on the Packers.
Welch has a good relationship with special teams coach Rich Bisaccia.
“I love Rich. He’s great,” said Welch via the Packers website. “Learning his system has been fun. And really kind of getting to hone in on the certain little details as we’ve gone through training camp here too has been fun.”
Welch grew up a Packers fan

Welch is getting another chance to play for the team he cheered for growing up. One of the reasons why Green Bay is a draw for Welch is that his friends and family live close enough to watch him play at Lambeau Field.
“That was probably one of the most wholesome parts of being so close is being able to have family and friends come to every game,” Welch said. “I had at least 10 family and friends come to every home game. Having their support, being able to talk to them after the game at the house and everything, that part was really fun and really special for me.”
Welch isn’t guaranteed a roster spot for 2025, and he will still need to fight in a competitive locker room. The Packers have off-the-ball linebackers Edgerrin Cooper, Isaiah McDuffie, Ty’Ron Hopper, Quay Walker, and Welch on the roster.
