Former Cowboys 2nd-Rounder Signed by New Team Despite Health Struggles

Sep 13, 2020; Inglewood, California, USA; Dallas Cowboys cornerback Chidobe Awuzie (24) hangs on to the ball after he intercepted a pass intended for Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Van Jefferson (12) in the second half of the game at SoFi Stadium.

After being released by the Tennessee Titans almost two weeks ago, former Dallas Cowboys cornerback Chidobe Awuzie has landed a new opportunity for the 2025 season.

The former Cowboys cornerback signed a one-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens on Tuesday. According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Awuzie is getting a minimum deal from Baltimore, as the Titans still owe the veteran defender $7.5 million this season.

The former Dallas defensive back has struggled with injuries throughout his career. Last season with the Titans, Awuzie played eight games (seven starts) after being placed on injured reserve with a groin injury.

Awuzie started the first three games of the season and returned to the field in Week 14 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The veteran defender finished the 2024 campaign with 26 combined tackles, four pass deflections, and an interception.

The veteran defensive back was held to eight games in 2022 with the Cincinnati Bengals due to a torn ACL. Then, in his last year with the Cowboys (2020), he played eight games because of a hamstring injury.

The 29-year-old Awuzie was taken in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Cowboys, where he spent four years in Dallas.

One of Awuzie’s best seasons with the Cowboys was 2019. He posted 79 combined tackles, 14 pass deflections, and an interception in 16 games. Awuzie also possessed a 59.8 completion percentage allowed on targets, an 89.1 passer rating allowed when targeted, and only gave up three receiving touchdowns.

When healthy, the former Cowboys draft pick is a solid cornerback as he showed in Dallas and with the Bengals for a short period of time. Awuzie will get another chance, this time with a contender in the AFC to show that he can be an every-down contributor in 2025.
