UPDATE: Josh Butler is done for the season with an ACL injury (torn) that will require surgery to repair

The Dallas Cowboys on Friday received another injury blow.

During his appearance on 105.3 The Fan, executive vice president and director of player personnel Stephen Jones said cornerback Josh Butler suffered a torn ACL injury in the first half of Thursday’s game against the New York Giants.

Butler is expected to undergo season-ending surgery and will be moved to injured reserve, according to Jones.

Butler, who turned 28 this week, started in consecutive games in place of fellow injured cornerback Trevon Diggs. Butler’s recent emergence served as a bright spot for a defense that has been slow to establish its identity. The former undrafted defensive back recorded a career-high 10 tackles, three passes defensed, and one sack during the team’s Week 12 win at Washington

Jones also said safety and key special-teamer Juanyeh Thomas suffered a meniscus injury during Thursday’s contest. The injury is expected to sideline Thomas between 2-3 weeks, Jones said.

Thomas ranks third on Dallas with 238 special teams snaps (68.4%) logged this season.

Coach Mike McCarthy acknowledged both injuries during his conference call with local reporters Friday afternoon.

“We’re still getting information, the scans are in, so we do have initial opinions,” McCarthy said. “Juanyeh’s was better than we had feared. But Josh Butler was of serious nature.”
