FRISCO – A few months ago, it appeared Ashton Jeanty to the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL Draft would be a lock.

The Cowboys’ stagnant run game needed a revamped philosophy along with a reset of talent in the backfield. Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty looked like the seamless fit at The Star.

His talent on the field spoke volumes about his potential for the next level and his Frisco roots made for a perfect connection. Jeanty has not been shy about his intentions either.

He has indicated on multiple occasions his desire to return home and believes he can become a major contributor for the Cowboys’ offense.

The Cowboys prioritized certain needs in free agency that leave them less desperate for a running back and Jeanty’s stock has gone up, making him a popular selection in mock drafts for teams slated ahead of the Cowboys.

What once was a decision that nearly all draft analysts stood in lockstep has now evolved to a much more complicated situation.

One thing that has become clear? If the Cowboys truly want Jeanty on their team, they will have to work for him. Lou Scataglia of NFL Spin Zone has Dallas trading up to pick No. 8, swapping with the Carolina Panthers to pick Jeanty.

Considering Jeanty’s stock, a move like this one would likely be necessary to select him.

But that is no guarantee. The Las Vegas Raiders at No. 6 have some projected interest in Jeanty, so Dallas could be forced to go higher in terms of trading up.

Such behavior has certainly not been a trademark of how things have operated at The Star and while the Cowboys like Jeanty, that level of interest may not be present.

With Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders now on the roster, the Cowboys could decide they are satisfied enough to wait on selecting a running back until later in the draft.

But in any situation where they decide Jeanty is their target, they will have to put in the work to get him.
