The New England Patriots came into the NFL offseason badly needing help at the wide receiver position. Last year, quarterback Drake Maye took over as the starting quarterback as a rookie.
He looked good throughout his first NFL season, but there was a clear need for more weapons.
Maye completed 66.6% of his passes for 2,276 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, while also rushing for 421 yards and two scores on the ground.
It was expected that the Patriots would land a top-tier wideout.
That didn’t end up happening. Now, they are still in a position of need at wide receiver. One intriguing name was brought in for a visit in the last week.
Stefon Diggs took a visit with New England, but no deal was completed at the time.
Diggs happens to be the best wide receiver left on the open market. Could the Patriots end up signing Diggs?
One team insider believes that they should take a chance on him. Mike Giardi of the Boston Sports Journal sees the value of signing him and seeing what happens. ”
But seems like it’s worth a dice roll at this point,” Giardi said. “Just based on, ‘This is our room, we got problems’.
And if he can be 85% to 90% of what he was before the injury, at some point during the season, then that’s our best receiver. Period. End of story.” “If [Stefon Diggs] can be 85% to 90% of what he was before the injury then that’s [their] best receiver period. end of story.”

Diggs is coming off of a torn ACL that he suffered after playing just eight games with the Houston Texans in 2024. In those eight games, the 31-year-old wideout caught 47 passes for 496 yards and three touchdowns.
