Former Green Bay Packers OL Signs With Bengals; Fans Far From Thrilled

The Green Bay Packers are one of the best teams in the NFL when it comes to finding and developing offensive lineman. What is more, they have a tendency of finding lineman who turn into long-time starters in the later round of the NFL Draft or as undrafted free agents.

This upcoming season, Green Bay’s offensive line will include Aaron Banks, who was signed as a free agent away from the San Francisco 49ers. This will be a bit of a change for the Packers, who in recent years have typically boasted an line made up entirely of their own draft picks.

Back in 2016, Green Bay signed Lucas Patrick as an undrafted free agent. Despite not being drafted, he went on to have a longer tenure with the team than every player the Packers actually selected that year except for Kenny Clark and Dean Lowry.

And now he has signed on to play with a new team as he enters his 10th year in the NFL.

Former Green Bay Packers Offensive Lineman Lucas Patrick Has Signed with the Cincinnati Bengals

Following his five seasons with the Packers, Patrick spent two years with the Chicago Bears. After that, he headed south to New Orleans, where he has played for the past two seasons.

Now, he is heading back up north, but this time in the AFC North where he will play for the Cincinnati Bengals:

Cincinnati, of course, has made headlines as of late because of the hundreds of millions of dollars they just threw at their top two wide receivers, Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Chase, who won the wide receiver Triple Crown in 2024 after leading the NFL in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns, is now the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history, making north of $40 million a season.

Of course, his contract, in addition to those of Higgins and their star quarterback, Joe Burrow, does not leave much room for the Bengals to sign other high-quality free agents.

Patrick is an aging veteran who only played 11 games last season due to injury. While his longevity is to be admired, many fans are cautious about the signing.

Cincinnati Bengals Fans Do Not Want Former Green Bay Packers Lineman Lucas Patrick to Start

Cincinnati, for all of their offensive talent and weapons, have had one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL for years. Fans view Patrick as a good depth signing, but express that they will be concerned if he is relied upon to start:

This is a good signing for depth, but I hope that Patrick isn’t the plan to start at G next year for the Bengals. https://t.co/H9BgvMDwcX

Hopefully for depth https://t.co/0t9vzuKihz

🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ it’s gonna be open season on burrow https://t.co/irh36T673y

Got the depth now sign 2 starters at the position and give Trey his money https://t.co/VtBwytFr22

The good news for Cincinnati is that Patrick has experience at both guard positions and at center. They can, literally, plug him in at any of the interior line positions and he would be an upgrade over what they had last year.

The problem, as fans note, is that he is not a long-term solution.

Still, it is impressive that a guy, who got his start in the NFL after a rookie camp tryout with the Packers, is about to enter his tenth year in the league.

Most players do not last that long.
