It was a tough rookie season for Javon Baker, but the Patriots wideout hopes to benefit from a new coaching staff.
Baker came out swinging after New England drafted him in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. The 23-year-old’s viral quote about making people in wheelchairs stand up had fans pumped about his future. However, he only played 11 games and caught just one pass on four targets for a measly 12 yards.
Despite the disappointing rookie season and a bleak outlook, Baker still has fans within the organization, according to the Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed on Wednesday. The Patriots insider added in a Reddit AMA that Baker “already made a connection” with head coach Mike Vrabel.
Kyed acknowledged that Baker had nowhere to go but up, and his career could get back on track if he fits well in Josh McDaniels’ system. The fact that he is already connected with the new coaching staff should bode well for his prospects.
However, New England could add a top wideout like Stefon Diggs and draft more pass-catchers in the 2025 NFL Draft. That means Baker’s roster spot is by no means guaranteed. However, he seems committed to making things work with the Patriots.
