Cowboys have trade interest in backup QB

FRISCO — The Dallas Cowboys are in the market for some quarterback depth this offseason. Usually not a matter front of mind at The Star, the team will be going in a different direction heading into 2025.

Stephen Jones hinted at that change a few weeks ago at the NFL Scouting Combine. Now, those changes are a reality.

Cooper Rush made that official over the weekend when he signed with the Baltimore Ravens, becoming the new backup for two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson.

It appears the Trey Lance experiment could be reaching its conclusion as well. With Will Grier now the only other quarterback besides Dak Prescott on the roster, Dallas will shop for more of an insurance policy.

That may come through the NFL Draft or the Cowboys could opt for a trade. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler believes New England Patriots quarterback Joe Milton III could be in play.

“Joe Milton, this is a really interesting name in this quarterback carousel we’re talking about because he has trade interest,” Fowler said Wednesday.

“The Patriots are exploring a trade. I’m told several teams are interested. One team to potentially watch for is the Dallas Cowboys because they are looking for a good backup, a young backup with upside they may not get in the draft, maybe they get in a trade.”

Upside makes for a strong argument for the Cowboys to shop around the league. The 2025 quarterback class does not showcase much promise and Milton (6-5 and 247!) could be a solid option having graced an NFL field already.

Milton may not have been a heralded prospect coming out of the college ranks. But flashes from the preseason and last year’s 241-yard one-touchdown outing against the Buffalo Bills have some wondering if his potential consists of more than what many originally thought.

As to whether or not the Cowboys would pull such a maneuver, that depends on what they are looking for. The draft may present a viable short-term solution.

However, in theory Milton could not only get the team through next season, but have some viability to hold down the spot behind Prescott for the coming seasons.
