Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson is a Super Bowl-winner without a team. He has taken two visits to quarterback-starved teams and he has not found a home.
Perhaps it will change this week.
Wilson, 36, met with the Cleveland Browns on March 13 at their facilities in Berea, Ohio and no deal was reached. He then hopped on a jet and flew to New Jersey to meet with the New York Giants later that night.
After spending a day and a half with the Giants brass, he was not satisfied with the Giants offer, according to published reports, and flew back home without a contract.
He has now reached out to Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, wishing the coach a happy birthday on social media. Tomlin did not post a response. It does not seem likely a reunion will happen.
The post had mixed reactions from the fans.
“Russ a good dude at the end of the day tho man. He never gotten the respect he deserves. Be he a champion no matter how you put it,” one fan commented.
Another fan simply said, “(Expletive) it bring him back.”
He also had his detractors.
“This man just won’t go tf awayyyy man,” an angry fan said.
Another one said Wilson only reached out to Tomlin because he doesn’t want to play for the Giants, who were a dumpster fire last season.
Finally, one woman posted, “He wants a job so bad that he’s wishing the HC that don’t want him back a happy birthday.”
However, Rodgers is said to be the top preference for the Steelers.
The Giants and the Steelers are holding out hope for 41-year old Aaron Rodgers, who is currently on a beach somewhere contemplating his next move. He will decide between the Giants, the Steelers and the Minnesota Vikings.
He will also decide if he wants to hang up his cleats and call it a career.
Until the Rodgers domino falls, teams are in a holding pattern, which means Wilson will not get an aggressive offer until Rodgers’ plans are determined, which means more waiting on the Vikings.
Part of the holdup, according to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, is that Rodgers is waiting on the Vikings to decide if they want to sign a high-priced veteran to challenge J.J. McCarthy. Until the Vikings move, Rodgers is content to wait and leave everyone in the lurch.
“Rodgers is giving them time and waiting to hear from Minnesota,” Russini said. “The Vikings have yet to make a decision. We all wait.”
Wilson had a rather productive season for the Steelers last season after taking over from Justin Fields. He threw for 2,468 yards, 16 touchdowns and only five interceptions. Wilson can only pack his bags and wait to hear where he is going to go next.
