The NFL news cycle truly never sleeps, and that makes free agency an anxious time for fans. You never know what you’re going to wake up to.

Cowboys fans will be having a great Friday morning however, as Adam Schefter dropped some major news about an overnight development on one of the best remaining free agents on the market.

Cooper Kupp may well be coming to Dallas.

Cowboys Emerge as Serious Cooper Kupp Suitors

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Friday morning that the Dallas Cowboys have “emerged and [are] now making a push to sign” free agent wide receiver Cooper Kupp. His next post made things sound even further along, saying that “Overnight, the Cowboys … are working on [a deal] with former Rams WR Cooper Kupp.”

Wide receiver was an obvious need for Dallas this offseason with Brandin Cooks gone, Jonathan Mingo clearly not a reliable WR2 answer and Kavontae Turpin’s extension being as much about special teams as his wide receiver play.

But as exciting as the move itself is the message signing Kupp sends. Jerry Jones has learned from last offseason’s mistakes. He’s willing to make a splash again. He’s going to try surrounding Dak Prescott with talent. Or so we hope.

Of course we’re left with two questions: is Kupp still as good as we want him to be? And will he actually sign with the Cowboys?

PFF gave Kupp an overall grade of 71.2 in 2024, which ranked just 49th among 98 qualifying WRs. He ranked 41st in 2023 after finishing top-10 in both 2021 and 2022. At 31 years old and having been limited to 12 or fewer games due to injuries in each of the last three seasons, this is also the kind of signing with high bust potential.

And while Kupp’s priorities for his next team haven’t been leaked publicly, Dallas isn’t exactly the hot-ticket free agency destination it once was.

The Green Bay Packers and Denver Broncos remain serious contenders for his services, and both rank ahead of the Cowboys in DraftKings Sportsbook’s 2025-26 Super Bowl odds.

One way or another, Kupp is expected to make his decision on Friday.

Update — Friday March 14, 9:44 a.m. ET:Schefter has dumped a little bit of cold water on the excitement this morning, with his latest update being that the Cowboys are still “not considered the likely landing spot” for Kupp.
