White Sox Option Left-Hander To Triple-A Charlotte, Cut Roster Down To 54

The White Sox have optioned left-hander Jared Shuster to Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday, cutting their roster in camp to 54 players.

Shuster posted a 4.30 ERA in 39 appearances for the White Sox last season, four of which were starts. The 26-year-old was part of a five-player return last offseason when Chris Getz dealt Aaron Bummer to the Atlanta Braves.  In 73.1 innings of work he owned a 17.4 percent strikeout rate and a 10.3 percent walk rate.

Those numbers are on par with what he posted for the Braves minor league affiliate in Gwinnett when he was tagged for a 5.01 ERA while striking out just 17.9 percent of opponents and walking 12.6 percent of Triple-A hitters he faced.

While the move is discouraging for Shuster, he still has some potential upside. Prior to the 2023 season, he was considered one of the top pitchers in the Braves Farm system after being selected in the first round out of Wake Forest. In 2022 he proved why after posting a 3.29 ERA paired with a 26.2 percent strikeout rate.

He still has one option year remaining, which could put him in a position to be back on the major league roster in the future.
