Dodgers Catcher Named Potential Trade Candidate at 2025 Deadline

Superior Dodgers poised to beat Mets on road to World Series - Los Angeles Times

The Los Angeles Dodgers are loaded with talent at just about every position, but one spot on the field stands out above the rest: Catcher.

Will Smith and Austin Barnes are the team’s top two backstops, but with Smith dealing with a lingering ankle injury, the Dodgers have had to count on Hunter Feduccia — and he has risen to the occasion.

Feduccia made his big league debut last season when Barnes went down with a broken toe but his Cactus League performances this spring was beyond impressive. He went 7-for-24 with three doubles, a home run, and eight runs batted in.

While Feduccia has been impressive, he isn’t the team’s best catching prospect which leads The Athletic’s Jim Bowden to believe that the Dodgers might consider trading Feduccia ahead of the trade deadline.

“The Dodgers are loaded at catcher with Will Smith and Austin Barnes at the major-league level and Dalton Rushing, their top position player prospect, in the minors,” writes Bowden. “But don’t sleep on Feduccia, who is another top catching prospect.

“Regardless of whether he gets a chance with the Dodgers, the 27-year-old will be a starting catcher for someone at some point and could be used as a trade asset at the deadline. A left-handed hitter, Feduccia had an .838 OPS at Triple A in 2023 and an .837 OPS at Triple A in 2024. He batted .313 with a homer and seven RBIs in his first 16 spring at-bats.”

Feduccia immediately impressed when he drove in five runs against the Kansas City Royals in late February. Feduccia singled in two runs in the first inning, singled again in the third, and hit a three-run home run in the fourth.

Since then, his offensive production has slowed down, but Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes still told Bowden that “Feduccia has really stood out this spring.”

“He’s (shown an) ability to conduct an at-bat at a high level; he’s really dialed in to get off his ‘A’ swing,” Gomes said. “Defensively, he’s receiving the ball well and you can tell there’s a different comfort level when handling the pitching staff.”

Feduccia is part of the 31-man roster the Dodgers have brought to Japan — but he’s unlikely to be on the active roster and get any playing time barring an injury to Smith or Barnes.
