Packers get major update on Jaire Alexander’s future | Sporting News

With the NFL offseason in full swing, the Green Bay Packers have made two intriguing free agency moves. They have agreed to terms with offensive lineman Aaron Banks and cornerback Nate Hobbs.

Those two signings are solid moves, although the money given to Banks has been criticized quite heavily by the media. However, there is another huge question mark hanging over the team’s head.

What will the Packers choose to do with star cornerback Jaire Alexander?

A new update has been given about the situation. Green Bay may make a move with Alexander as soon as today.

According to a note from ESPN Packers’ insider Rob Demovsky, Green Bay could make a decision on Alexander’s future today. He shared two potential reasons for a lack of clarity about the situation.

One potential reason could be that the Packers are holding out and hoping that they could get something in return via a trade. Another reason could be that they have to wait until 3:00 p.m. today in order to designate him as a post-June 1 cut.

Today could be the day for Jaire Alexander news. The Packers haven’t released him yet because:

*They’re still holding out hope they can get something in return in a trade.

*If they want to designate him a post-June 1 cut for cap purposes, they have to wait until 3 pm today.

It seems very likely that Alexander’s time with the team has come to an end. Brian Gutekunst could change his mind and look to restructure the star cornerback, but that doesn’t sound like Alexander’s style.

Over the last couple of years, the 28-year-old star defensive back has been unable to stay healthy. He has played in just seven games each of the last two years.

During the 2024 season in just seven games, Alexander still showed how impactful he can be. He racked up 16 tackles, a fumble recovery, two interceptions, a defensive touchdown, and seven defended passes.

Letting that kind of potential and ability walk for free is a tough pill to swallow. Unfortunately, that seems very likely to end up being the case.

Only time will tell what the front office chooses to do, but there might be some news on Alexander in the very near future.
