Replacing Najee Harris is not going to be easy for the Pittsburgh Steelers, but they knew that was going to be the case when they let him walk out the door as a free agent.
He’s now the newest member of the Los Angeles Chargers on a one-year deal worth up to $9.25M , but Pittsburgh clearly feels it can replace his production via committee rather than paying the 27-year old running back after 1,097 carries over his first four seasons .
First up for the chance to be the lead back is Jaylen Warren, who rushed 120 times for 511 yards and a touchdown last season as a backup to Harris.
The Steelers also just made a move to help their running game by bringing in former Philadelphia Eagles running back Kenneth Gainwell.
According to Brooke Pryor, the Steelers and Gainwell accepted terms of a one-year deal on Wednesday.
Gainwell was a backup for Saquon Barkley last season and put up 290 yards and a touchdown on 75 carries. He’s carried the ball 280 times since the Eagles selected him in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Memphis for 1,185 total yards and 12 total touchdowns.
There’s absolutely a case to be made that he could have played a bigger role last season had Barkley not had a campaign for the ages for the Eagles.
