The New England Patriots are taking a careful approach this offseason, especially when examining free agents.
New England became tied to several premier free agents, watching most of them sign elsewhere, including two-time Pro Bowler Ronnie Stanley, who re-signed with the Baltimore Ravens.
But that doesn’t mean the front office and ownership aren’t trying and aren’t considering these candidates, even as they proceeded to ink deals outside of Foxborough.
The next notable tackle available in free agency, for example: Cam Robinson, isn’t just examined for his on-field production and abilities.
“Cam Robinson’s reputation is a little spotty, so there may be some feel there,” Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reported Tuesday. “But this isn’t about being cheap. This is about, ‘If we give him a certain number, is he gonna kick his feet back? Do we wanna give him something that has maybe a little bit more of an incentive later?’”
Robinson split time last season, logging appearances with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Minnesota Vikings — he was dealt at the NFL trade deadline.
The 29-year-old second-rounder from the 2017 draft played a full season and registered a pass-blocking grade of 70.4, according to Pro Football Focus.
That’s slated Robinson for a payday that while warranted, still raises concerns within New England’s brass about how reliable the eight-year veteran will perform after netting a major contract.
It’s a fair concern, especially coming from New England’s perspective.
Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel is working toward re-establishing the team’s damaged culture, coming off consecutive last-place finishes in the AFC East.
It’s going to take an all-in approach from the locker room to help repair the winning tradition fans were accustomed to for over two decades in Foxbrough, therefore, any iffy feelings toward a newcomer, particularly one arriving with an upgraded salary, doesn’t help the cause.
The Patriots have already done their part in discrediting the “cheap” notions by diving into the open market.
New England reportedly added Milton Williams (to a $104 million contract), Carlton Davis ($60 million), Harold Landry ($43.5 million) and Robert Spillane ($37.5 million), among others.
There’s still time to dive further in before April’s 2025 NFL Draft when the Patriots are on the clock with the No. 4 overall pick.
