After a CT scan revealed nothing more than a bone bruise in the left wrist, the Braves are expecting left fielder Jurickson Profar to be ready for Opening Day. Profar suffered the injury on Saturday in a Spring Training matchup against the Pirates. He was attempting to make a sliding catch in the fourth inning of the 6-5 win for Atlanta. Profar rolled around in pain, holding onto his left wrist, and was then evaluated by head athletic trainer George Poulis.
The left fielder was removed from the game and received X-rays, which came back negative. Profar flew to Atlanta on Sunday to undergo a CT scan, which revealed the bone bruise. He may rest for the remainder of the week, but the Braves expect that he will be in the lineup for Atlanta’s first game at the Padres on March 27.
The Braves will be relying on Profar to kick off the season, so news about his CT scan is relieving for the team. Profar was an off season pickup from the Padres and was signed to a three-year, $42 million dollar deal. This trade was made in hopes of minimizing the impact of Ronald Acuña Jr.’s absence. Acuña is expected to return from his ACL tear at some point in May. Until then, Profar will play left field and serve as Atlanta’s lead off hitter.
Losing Profar before the regular season even starts would be devastating for the Braves, so news of his minimal injury and likely return for Opening Day is promising.
