The Dallas Cowboys have opened up nearly $60 million in cap space with the contract restructures of Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb.
The expectation is that Dallas will be more aggressive in free agency, likely targeting tier 2 and tier 3 players. But who might they be after during the first few waves of free agency? Here are three players that are likely on their free-agent radar.
Best free-agent fits for the Dallas Cowboys:
Robert Spillane, LB, Las Vegas Raiders
If the Cowboys had to play a game tomorrow, Marist Liufau and Damone Clark would be the starting linebackers.
Yikes. DeMarvion Overshown is rehabbing from a major knee injury for the second consecutive season and Eric Kendricks is set to become a free agent.
Robert Spillane is far from a big game, but he is the type of linebacker that Matt Eberflus would love.
Spillane has played nearly 2,220 snaps for the Raiders over the last two seasons, racking up 306 tackles and 10 tackles for a loss. His durability can’t be matched, but his improvements in coverage have made him one of the better linebackers in the league.
Age is a concern (he will turn 30 in December), but the Cowboys don’t need a long-term option here. They just need a quality linebacker for a year or two, and that is why Spillane is so appealing.
He’s an every-down linebacker who has recorded five interceptions in two years and is incredible in the run game. If he does hit free agency, it only makes sense that Dallas would be interested.
Marquise Brown, WR, Kansas City Chiefs
You can make an argument that No. 2 wide receiver is the biggest hole on the roster for the Cowboys entering the season. They have to find a better complement to CeeDee Lamb and unfortunately, that isn’t Jalen Tolbert or Jonathan Mingo.
While Dallas won’t be “in” on the top-end talent in free agency, there is some viable talent available later who could prove to be major upgrades.
One such player is former Oklahoma wide receiver Marquise Brown, a speedy receiver who has had a nice career in the NFL. Brown missed most of the 2024 season with a shoulder injury but returned for the last few weeks of the year and played in the postseason.
While his numbers were far from impressive, he did make some key plays for the Chiefs in their run to the Super Bowl.
Brown played with Lamb during their days together at Oklahoma and their skill sets complement each other well.
Brown is a vertical receiver who can take the top off the defense, while Lamb does most of his work in the middle of the field.
The Cowboys would be wise to look to the draft to find more receiver help, but Brown could be a nice short-term option as Dallas tries to get more explosive on offense.
Brown would be the best deep threat on the roster right away and certainly wouldn’t break the bank.
Rasul Douglas, CB, Buffalo Bills
Cornerback is another position that is a major question mark for Dallas entering free agency.
Jourdan Lewis is scheduled to become a free agent, and Trevon Diggs suffered a major knee injury at the end of the season that could cause him to miss multiple months of the 2025 season.
The Cowboys really could use one more veteran cornerback who can play on the outside until Diggs returns from his injury. But most of the top cornerbacks in free agency will be far outside the price range of Dallas. However, Rasul Douglas could be a good target for Dallas, assuming they would be willing to pay $10-12 million for a short-term rental.
Douglas is an older cornerback (he will turn 30 by Week 1), but he’s played a ton of snaps over the last few seasons with the Bills and Packers.
He is no longer a No. 1 cornerback, but he is a playmaker and has had a ton of luck finding the football (14 interceptions since 2021).
The Cowboys are expected to bring Lewis back at some point in free agency and they still have Daron Bland under contract.
Adding a player like Douglas would give them another quality option and solid depth until Diggs can get back on the field.
