Pittsburgh, March 05, 2025 – Ben Roethlisberger, the legendary Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback and one of the franchise’s all-time greats, is open to returning to the organization in a new role: offensive assistant coach. However, “Big Ben” has laid out a clear condition – the Steelers must either secure a high-quality quarterback or retain the promising Justin Fields.
In a recent episode of his podcast Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger, the 42-year-old former QB expressed his unwavering love for Pittsburgh and his desire to contribute to the team he once led to two Super Bowl victories. “I’ve always said Pittsburgh is home. If the Steelers need me, I’m ready to help. But I want to work with a quarterback who’s got real potential – someone I can mentor and help take to the next level,” Roethlisberger shared.
Roethlisberger didn’t hold back his admiration for Justin Fields, the 25-year-old quarterback who joined the Steelers from the Chicago Bears in 2024. Despite competing with Russell Wilson for the starting role last season, Fields showcased flashes of brilliance with his dynamic rushing ability and creative passing. “Fields is a special talent. He needs time and stability to grow. If the Steelers keep him, I think we could build something big,” Big Ben remarked.
But if the Steelers fail to extend Fields – who is set to become a free agent at the end of this season – Roethlisberger believes the team should target a top-tier QB in free agency or the 2025 NFL Draft. “I’m not interested in just sitting there with a half-baked roster. If the Steelers are serious about getting back to the top, they need a quarterback who can carry the offense. Then, I’d be thrilled to jump in and help out,” he added.
The idea of Roethlisberger stepping into an offensive assistant coach role isn’t far-fetched. With 18 years of NFL experience – all with the Steelers – he brings a wealth of knowledge about offensive systems and an uncanny ability to read defenses, traits that cemented his legacy in the league. Steelers fans have long dreamed of seeing Big Ben back with the team, not on the field, but on the sidelines, inspiring the next generation.
So far, Steelers management, led by general manager Omar Khan and head coach Mike Tomlin, has not commented officially on the possibility. Yet with the team facing a pivotal offseason decision at the quarterback position, Roethlisberger’s offer could push them to act decisively – either by locking in Fields or pursuing a new star.
Whatever happens, one thing is certain: Big Ben’s return, in any capacity, would ignite excitement among the Steelers faithful. Will Pittsburgh meet his condition? Only time will tell.
