Seattle Seahawks receiver DK Metcalf let it be known on Wednesday that he wants to be traded to a contender, following unsuccessful contract negotiations with the franchise and the team’s release of fellow receiver Tyler Lockett. Both he and the Seahawks are now looking for potential trade suitors, as the team has acknowledged his request, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
So what are teams willing to give up for the right to pay Metcalf a new extension? NFL insider Josina Anderson reported on Wednesday night that there’s at least one team willing to give up a third-round pick in a trade for Metcalf. That’s on par with the trade of Stefon Diggs last offseason, when the Buffalo Bills received the Houston Texans’ second-round pick in exchange for Diggs, a fifth-round pick and a sixth-round pick.
But what are the Seahawks willing to accept? The Athletic’s Dianna Russini claims they are looking for a first-round pick and a third-round pick, similar to the A.J. Brown trade in the 2022 offseason that sent him from the Tennessee Titans to the Philadelphia Eagles.
That’s a massive gap. Maybe this trade won’t be happening as quickly as we thought. The prospect of sending a first-round pick and more just to pay Metcalf a $30 million per year extension might not interest any team in the league, even with a relatively weak free agent and draft class at the position this spring.
It’s worth noting here that The Athletic hasn’t had a very good track record about the Metcalf news so far this offseason. While it was being reported that the Green Bay Packers and Seahawks had discussions over a Metcalf trade, Packers beat reporter Matt Schneidman stated that the two sides had never had a conversation about a trade. After Metcalf’s trade request, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that conversations have been going on for weeks, officially or not. A third reporter from The Athletic, Jeff Howe, said that it didn’t sound like Metcalf was going to be available for a trade this offseason on Monday, just days before Metcalf and the Seahawks started working together to find a potential trade partner.
