Rumors are swirling in New England like a nor’easter when it comes to the Patriots seeking to obtain wide receiver A.J. Brown from the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. Matthew Berry of NBC Sports is reporting he heard there were serious discussions between the two sides at the recent NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
“I’ve heard the Patriots WILL do whatever they can to get a real “WR1″ for Drake Maye,” Berry posted on social media. “One person told me they heard the Patriots called Philly asking if A.J. Brown was available.”
Bringing in a top-tier wide receiver for Maye has been listed as a top priority by Mike Vrabel, new coach of the Patriots.
The Eagles’ Brown would certainly fit the mold on that. A.J. Brown of the Philadelphia Eagles / Clutchpoints Ryan McLaughlin of Musket Fire had floated the idea weeks ago that a trade between New England and Philadelphia would send Brown to the Patriots.
It seems as though where there is smoke there is fire. The Patriots are armed with a war chest of over $130 million under the salary cap.
They are going to make a run at a top wide receiver in free agency. It just does not appear that it is going to be Brown.
With Tee Higgins being franchised in Cincinnati by the Bengals, it leaves Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf and San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk as potential trade targets, along with the aforementioned Brown.
Tom E. Curran of NBC Sports Boston believes Metcalf and Aiyuk are going to be out of the Patriots’ trade range, but Brown is very viable. ”
AJ Brown is a much more reasonable get” Is AJ Brown still ‘In play” for the Patriots this off-season?
We asked Patriots insider @tomecurran and it sounds like the dream isn’t dead yet! pic.twitter.com/pqfS7a3gw5 — Jones & Keefe (@JonesandKeefe) March 4, 2025 “AJ Brown is a much more reasonable get. Why would the Eagles divorce themselves from him?
I don’t know exactly, but that’s reasonable,” Curran said. I also think that Davante Adams and Chris Godwin are very reasonable.”
Maybe so. But frankly, the more the Pats media talks about this, the more it sounds like “rumors” rather than “reports.”
