Back in 2017, the Green Bay Packers selected two running backs in the NFL Draft that would go on to become two of the most beloved players in recent memory.

Of course, these were Jamaal Williams in the fourth round and Aaron Jones in the fifth.

For four seasons, Williams and Jones were Green Bay’s primary running back duo.

Unfortunately, though, the Packers decided that they would not be able to afford giving both of them a second contract following the 2020 NFL season. Jones was awarded a second contract, and Williams was allowed to depart in free agency.

After the Packers decided not to re-sign him following the 2020 season, Williams signed as a free agent with the Detroit Lions.

In his first season with Detroit, Williams had a career-high 601 rushing yards, but it was what he did in 2022 that was astounding.

That year, the former Packers running back not only eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards, but he also led the NFL with 17 rushing touchdowns.

Despite that incredible performance, the Lions decided to cut Williams in favor of a younger running back room.

He subsequently signed with the New Orleans Saints, but has not enjoyed the same success with them over the last two seasons as he did with his previous two teams in the NFC North.

This past season, Williams rushed for just 164 yards and a touchdown in 14 games. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Saints released him on Tuesday.

Despite not having been with the Packers over the last four seasons, Williams is still beloved by the fanbase, as was evident by their reactions to the news he had been released by the Saints:

It will be interesting to see if Williams has a market this offseason after such a sharp decline in his production. Hopefully he finds a team where he can get a bit more playing time.
