Packers’ Davante Adams dreams likely rest on Aaron Rodgers after latest update

The Green Bay Packers need wide receiver help. Davante Adams will soon need a new team.

It’s a perfect match, right? A reunion would help fix the Packers’ need for a reliable target who can consistently beat man coverage, while Adams could push for a Super Bowl with the team that drafted him.

Not so fast. There’s good and bad news.

Let’s start with the good. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the New York Jets plan to move on from Adams. They are reportedly “taking calls” about a possible trade for the All-Pro wide receiver and will release him if they can’t find a partner.

The bad? Rapoport also notes that Adams “could rejoin QB Aaron Rodgers with a new team.”

While Rapoport isn’t reporting that Adams will follow Rodgers to his next destination, it makes too much sense. Adams moved to New York to reunite with his former MVP quarterback, and it won’t be surprising if he does the same this offseason.

The question now is if Rodgers returns and where he ends up.

Aaron Rodgers’ decision could impact Packers’ chances of landing Davante Adams

Several reporters connected Rodgers to the Los Angeles Rams. However, Matthew Stafford has since agreed to a restructured contract with the Rams, shutting one potential door for Rodgers.

Where’s next? The New York Giants? The Pittsburgh Steelers? There’s also a chance he retires.

If it’s the latter, the Packers would surely have to feel better about their chances of landing Adams. But if Rodgers continues to play and signs with a playoff contender like the Steelers, Green Bay may have a tough time convincing him to return.

While Green Bay could, in theory, jump the queue by agreeing a trade with the Jets, it’s hard to imagine Adams wouldn’t have the final say. It’s not like the Jets have much leverage. They are on the hook for a $38.25 million cap hit, which they can reduce to just $8.36 million by releasing or trading him. The Jets need to move on, so it makes sense they would work with Adams on his next destination.

The Packers have options, even if they miss out on their top trade or free-agency targets. They may prioritize the position early in the 2025 NFL Draft, which could be the best path to take.

An Adams reunion also makes sense, but the Packers’ chances may hinge on Rodgers’ future.
