T.J. Watt symbolizes everything it means to be a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
One of the greatest to ever don Black and Gold, seeing him put on another colorway would surely disappoint many in Pittsburgh.
But if Omar Khan has his way, that won’t happen…
Steelers View T.J. Watt as a ‘legacy’ player
“T.J. [Watt] is one of those legacy guys that, you know, I was around Hines Ward and Troy Polamalu, those guys played their entire careers, and that’s a special thing and I’m hopeful and confident that TJ will be one of those guys,” said Khan at the NFL Combine on Tuesday.
Now, some might be wondering how and why Watt is even being discussed as part of a trade, but the devil lies in the details. A star that plays one of the most physical positions in the NFL who is heading into the final year of his contract, has some wondering if now is the time the Steelers move off Watt…
“T.J. Watt’s only got one year left on his deal and I feel like I would just want to make sure the Steelers are aware he only has one year left on his deal and if they don’t want to extend him, be aware that other teams would be willing to extend him if they want to ship him over there,” said Solak on the Up & Adams show. “It was not the best T.J. Watt season last year. So I wonder if the Steelers are worried about the age a little bit. He was not as fast off the ball, and not as productive. He’s $30 million [a year], so it’s a weird spot.”
But when you have done as much for a city and franchise that Watt has, an organization as loyal as the Steelers is unlikely to consider any such thing. Instead, they should be focused on maximizing the remaining years in Watt’s prime and doing everything they can to avoid what happened in 2024.
“The way we ended was unacceptable. We know we have to be better and people expect better, added Khan on Tuesday. “We expect better, and that that can’t happen again. And, you know, I’m as just as disappointed as everyone else and, you know, I can tell you we’re working hard to fix that and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
