Trade Update: The One Free Agent the Packers Absolutely Can’t Afford to Lose!

The Green Bay Packers are well positioned as free agency nears.

General manager Brian Gutekunst and the Packers are slated to have upwards of $46 million in cap space, a young and ascending core on both sides of the ball, and Green Bay will likely spend this offseason looking to continue adding young pieces with upside both around quarterback Jordan Love and on defense.

But, that doesn’t mean there still won’t be difficult decisions to make before free agency kicks off.

Bleacher Report put together a list of each team’s must-re-sign free agent, including Packers linebacker Eric Wilson.

“Is he a make-or-break player? No,” Brad Gagnon writes for Bleacer Report. “But Josh Myers is likely unaffordable and replaceable, and Wilson is a strong insurance policy in the front seven for a team with no critical impending free agents.”

After seeing rookie Edgerrin Cooper emerge in 2024, the Packers would likely prefer to keep Wilson as a strong veteran presence at linebacker, alongside Green Bay’s emerging star.

The 6-foot-1 and 229-pound Wilson finished last season with 72 total tackles, two sacks, and one forced fumble as a key piece in coordinator Jeff Hafley’s defense.

Green Bay has plenty of cap space to keep the former undrafted free agent in the fold for 2025 and beyond, and maintaining continuity in the linebacking corps could be key for the defense to make major strides beginning next season.
