BREAKING NEWS: Steelers’ Justin Fields Now Has “More Than A 50/50 Chance” Of Signing With Jets

The Pittsburgh Steelers are going to be one of the most closely watched teams throughout the 2025 offseason, and that is mainly due to the quarterback situation that is currently up in the air. Both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are scheduled to hit free agency in March, and unless Pittsburgh strikes a deal with either quarterback before then, the players can find new homes and leave the Steelers without a starting-caliber quarterback. The organization has a few external options like Matthew Stafford and Aaron Rodgers, but those options seem more far-fetched than just re-signing Wilson or Fields.

Steelers’ Justin Fields arrives at training camp in Latrobe ahead of the 2024 season.

Fields is clearly the fan-favorite in any quarterback discussion in Pittsburgh. He is young, provides an extra layer to the offense because of his legs, and he likely hasn’t reached his full potential yet. He would also probably be the cheapest option mentioned. Re-signing Fields to a new deal before free agency begins should be a priority for Pittsburgh, as he is an intriguing player for teams around the league.

One team that is expected to be in the market for Fields is the New York Jets. Steelers insider Mark Kaboly spoke about the possibility of Fields heading to New York on 93.7 The Fan Monday morning.

“If everything would break their [the Steelers] way, they’d get Justin Fields,” Kaboly said. “If he ends up going to the Jets, which, I would probably give that more than a 50/50 chance right now.”

The Jets have already taken the Steelers’ former inside linebackers coach in Aaron Curry, and now they could be a dangerous threat in acquiring Fields’ services. It is understandable why New York may be an attractive destination for Fields. It is one of the biggest markets in sports, and he would be able to reunite with Garrett Wilson.

New York is also entering a new regime under Head Coach Aaron Glenn, who was one of the more sought after coaching candidates during the 2025 hiring cycle. If Fields is guaranteed an opportunity to start for New York, it is hard to imagine he would pass that up.

The Steelers did this to themselves. Fields was 4-2 and getting better with each week, yet Head Coach Mike Tomlin had to give Wilson his chance to shine. Had Tomlin allowed Fields to start the remainder of the 2024 season, the franchise would have a lot less questions moving forward. There would likely be no quarterback uncertainty. The organization would either know if it needed to draft or acquire a quarterback, or it could be preparing for its second season with its new franchise quarterback.

Fields’ market value is still low, and the Steelers are flush with cash moving forward. If the franchise really had the desire to sign the quarterback and didn’t want him to leave, it could offer him something more than he is projected. According to Spotrac, Fields is worth $6.4 million per season and he is projected to sign a one-year deal. If the Steelers offer him two-year deal worth $16 million, it is hard to imagine he would pass that up. For reference, the Steelers initially signed Mitch Trubisky to a $14.25 million deal.

Steelers Could Be Facing Off Against Justin Fields In 2025

The schedule for the 2025 season is not out yet, but the Steelers do know who they will be playing. They are set to travel to New Jersey to take on the Jets, and Fields could be the starter for either team by that time. The majority of the fan base in Pittsburgh wants to see Fields get an opportunity to be the starter in 2025, but that opportunity might just come from somewhere else.

There doesn’t seem to be much clarity in regards to what the organization is thinking at quarterback. Re-signing Fields seems like a no-brainer, but the Steelers could have something else up their sleeve.
