The White Sox are at the point in their rebuild where they need to be turning over every single stone to see if there are players that can contribute to the major league team when the team is competitive.
One of those players is none other than Oscar Colas. The former top-100 prospect has had an up and down career with the White Sox, as after he was sent down to the minor leagues in 2023, he hasn’t seemed to get a fair shot at another opportunity.
While Colas did not produce in 2023, as he hit .216 with five homeruns and 19 RBIs, he looked significantly better in 2024 when he got a chance to play.
In 13 games, Colas hit .273 with a .368 OBP. While those numbers aren’t going to get you into any all-star games, he looked significantly better than the last time he was up in Chicago.
Still just 26, Colas only has 278 at-bats under his belt at the major league level. There was a reason Colas was a top-100 prospect, yet Colas is running out of opportunities to play in Chicago.
However, an opportunity may have just opened for Colas, as a new report came out that could increase the playing time in Chicago for him.
According to Francys Romero, the White Sox are considering moving Colas to first base. This could open up a spot for Colas, as Gavin Sheets has left the White Sox, recently joining the San Diego Padres on a minor league deal. This leaves 300+ at-bats up for grabs at first and DH.
The Chicago White Sox are considering moving Oscar Colas to first base in 2025, per sources.
This could significantly improve his odds of making the Opening Day roster.

This won’t be something entirely new for Colas, as he played first when he was in Japan, so there should be a smooth transition back to first.
With a new manager, maybe Colas gets another look, as Pedro Grifol didn’t seem to be a fan of Colas for whatever reason. A spot won’t open up without competition though, as the newly added Joey Gallo and Bobby Dalbec, among others, will be fighting for time at first, DH, and a bench role.
Besides in AAA, the only spot that Colas could break camp with the team is at first/DH, as the team currently has five outfielders on the major league roster, so there will be no playing time there up for grabs.
Hopefully Colas has a strong Spring Training, but regardless of a position change, it will be an uphill battle to make the roster out of camp.
