The New England Patriots must strengthen their defensive line this offseason.
During training camp, the organization traded pass rusher Matthew Judon to the Atlanta Falcons. New England holds the No. 4 pick in this year’s draft, and Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter could fall into its lap.
If the Patriots don’t want to take Carter, or he’s not available when they are on the clock, the franchise could target a veteran pass rusher.
Cleveland Browns All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett requested a trade during Super Bowl week, and Dallas Cowboys edge rusher Micah Parsons doesn’t seem too happy with the Cowboys’ offseason changes.
Dallas parted ways with head coach Mike McCarthy, not extending his contract, and hired offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to replace him.
With Parsons possibly available, Greg Dudek from NESN believes the Patriots must make a run at him.
“Parsons would easily become New England’s best player on either side and transform their defensive unit, which features below average linebackers,” Dudek stated.
“When the Patriots were at their best in their dynastic years, they leaned heavily on game-changing linebackers, whether it was Willie McGinest, Dont’a Hightower or current head coach Mike Vrabel.”
New England going after Parsons would be a significant statement that new head coach Mike Vrabel is ready to win now.
With the quarterbacks the Patriots have to face in the AFC East, like the Bills’ Josh Allen, a star pass rusher could be why the team wins.
