The centerfielder has been the subject of trade rumors and is entering the final year of a six-year deal with his original team, which included two club options.
But for now, the All-Star is only worrying about improving his play on the South Side.
“They have been my team throughout my whole professional career in the U.S., right? And I think it would be beautiful to have the experience of playing for just one team—the team that gave me the opportunity to make my dream come true. That will be a really beautiful story,” Robert said through an interpreter. “But as I said before, that’s something I can’t control.”
Meanwhile, new Manager Will Venable’s first team as a big-league manager will be a young group, but one that is excited to get to work and help erase the memory of 121-loss season.
“He seems like the guy for the job. I mean, I think that he’s not too far removed from the game,” said White Sox outfielder Andrew Benintendi. “He’s been on some winning teams. He’s going to bring all that knowledge with him.”
“He called me in the offseason a couple of times. We were just talking about basketball, because we’ve both got a basketball background. So it’s really cool to relate to somebody like that,” said White Sox shortstop Colson Montgomery, “but he’s a great guy for this job.”
The Sox have a number of talented prospects fighting for roster spots — including Montgomery, a top prospect who will be competing for for starting shortstop job during his first spring training.
