Liverpool have suffered a major injury blow with Joe Gomez facing another extended spell on the sidelines. Gomez was forced off after only 11 minutes of his comeback to full fitness in the FA Cup fourth round defeat at Plymouth Argyle on Sunday.
The Reds defender subsequently underwent scans with Reds boss Arne Slot confirming the player had injured the same leg he damaged during the 5-0 win at West Ham United on December 29, a setback that ruled him out for six weeks before the trip to Devon at the weekend.
And Liverpool’s fears have been realised with Gomez now being sent for further tests on the injury to determine whether surgery is required to rectify the problem.
Gomez is now expected to miss a significant part of the remainder of the season and is almost certain to be ruled out of the League Cup final against Newcastle United at Wembley next month.
His absence leaves Liverpool with just Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Jarell Quansah as their senior centre-back options, with midfielder Wataru Endo having also started in the position in recent weeks.
