ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler ranked every NFL franchise into 1 of 11 tiers, in terms of their ability to contend for a Super Bowl in 2025, on Wednesday.
The Green Bay Packers fell into the third tier for Fowler, who listed the Packers and Minnesota Vikings in the “Need a postseason breakthrough” tier.
The teams ahead of Green Bay are the Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lions.
Here’s what Fowler had to say about the Packers:
Average age of roster: 25.5
Salary cap space: $35.8 million
Total 2025 draft picks (projected): 7
What’s next:
Known for drafting and developing most of the roster, the Packers would be wise to comb the trade or free agency market for bigger swings.
This is a good but not great team that can vault into the elite with a few more players. Why not call the Raiders on Maxx Crosby?
He would change the complexion of the team’s defense. And when Josh Jacobs is publicly questioning the Packers’ need for a No. 1 receiver, that’s probably a cue to at least look into it. The Packers sport one of the league’s youngest rosters, which bodes well for the future.
Re-signing center Josh Myers is a sensible move.
First of all, the Packers are expected to have eight draft picks this offseason, because they are going to receive a compensatory draft pick for Yosuah Nijman leaving last free agency cycle — even though they added safety Xavier McKinney and running back Josh Jacobs last year.
Green Bay is down one of their original draft picks because they traded for quarterback Malik Willis, but they received a Pittsburgh Steelers draft choice in the Preston Smith exchange.
I’m also not sold that the team will take a swing at Josh Myers in the offseason.
While Green Bay seems to value the leadership and protection-calling ability of Myers, who handles that duty instead of quarterback Jordan Love, the center hasn’t been a positive performer in his four seasons with the Packers.
Meanwhile, the team has 2024 first-round pick Jordan Morgan sitting on the bench. It seems more likely that Myers walks, which would allow for Morgan to play guard full-time while Elgton Jenkins kicks inside to center.
Taking a swing at an edge rusher in a trade makes sense, though. General manager Brian Gutekunst said he wanted to get aggressive this offseason, and the trade market has significantly better options at the edge rusher position than free agency.

Hopefully, the Lions and Vikings don’t keep up pace with the Packers this offseason.
Another year of the “toughest division in NFL history” narrative would be annoying for Green Bay fans, who watched their team go 1-7 against their division and the Super Bowl-winning Eagles but 10-0 against the rest of the field in 2024.
