Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl Champion and former coach Joey Porter Sr. believes that Steelers fans are ‘spoiled’ with the success the team has had under Mike Tomlin and even with the playoff losses, Tomlin is not even close to the hot seat.
“That’s just the price of doing business in Pittsburgh,” Porter said on NFL Network at Super Bowl media row. “I’m sorry that we’re not sorry that we’re spoiled to a point where 10 games ain’t good enough. So he’s been on a hot seat in their mind, the city’s mind. Not Mr. Rooney’s mind. Mr. Rooney know exactly what they have in a good coach in Mike Tomlin. But the city do this to him every year.”
Porter added that the fans do this with Tomlin every year, and while there is a natural disappointment for the Steelers and fans, they have more success than most teams in the NFL.
“Did we finish the way we want to finish? Absolutely not,” Porter said. “The five-game losing straight hurts. But are we that disappointed? Because I don’t think they had us winning 10 games and being close to winning the division. Because we had a chance to win the division before it was over. At the end of the day, we didn’t finish where we wanted to. But him being on the hot seat is just a Pittsburgh thing. They do this to him every year,”
The Steelers’ loss to the Baltimore Ravens extended the Steelers’ winless streak in the playoffs to eight years. Tomlin and the Steelers have lost six in a row in the postseason.
With that, Tomlin joins four other coaches in the pantheon of NFL history as coaches who have lost six or more straight playoff games in their career. Jim Mora, Marvin Lewis, Marty Schottenheimer, and Shane Owen are the only other coaches to reach that mark. Lewis holds the record with seven straight playoff losses.
