Those around the NFL apparently view the Cooper Kupp scenario similar to one involving a veteran receiver last season.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter appeared on “Postseason NFL Countdown” ahead of Super Bowl LIX and offered some insight into the Kupp sweepstakes. In doing so, he hinted it could play out similarly to when Keenan Allen was acquired for a fourth-rounder last year.
“I think when you speak to people in the league, they see Keenan Allen go last year for a fourth-round pick and they believe that Cooper Kupp is in a similar situation,” Schefter said.
The Chicago Bears acquired Allen from the Los Angeles Chargers a fourth-round pick in March. Allen turned 32 years old one month later, a similar scenario with Kupp set to enter his age-32 season.
Schefter also noted the Rams are “willing to pay” some of the money owed to Kupp. Kupp has two years remaining on his contract, which includes modest base values but high cap hits.
He’s owed a $7.5 million roster bonus in 2025 and $5 million roster bonus in 2026.
The New England Patriots, specifically, make a lot of sense for Kupp given their need to improve at the receiver position with quarterback Drake Maye entering a pivotal second season.
A Day 3 draft selection should be an easy price to sign off on.
