The Green Bay Packers have a great foundation for their short-term (and long-term) future. Quarterback Jordan Love has proven that he is, at the very very least, an average starting quarterback when playing injured (as he did for the entire 2024 NFL season). When he is healthy, he performs as well as any quarterback in the NFL.
Indeed, having a good-to-great franchise quarterback is one of the most important requirements for teams that hope to compete for a Super Bowl. But as the Packers learned last year, it is also vital to have a backup plan in place in the instance that the starter goes down with injury, whether it be for a few players or multiple weeks.
And the Packers have one in Malik Willis.
Green Bay Packers Quarterback Malik Willis Is a Hot Name in NFL Trade Rumors
Love went down in closing seconds of Green Bay’s Week One loss to the Philadelphia Eagles with a sprained MCL and was unavailable for the Packers’ next two games. In his place, Willis led the team to two victories, and then to another one later in the season when Love was knocked out of the Jacksonville Jaguars game early with a groin injury.
All told, Willis ended his 2024 NFL season with a 74.1% completion percentage, 550 passing yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions, and a 124.8 passer rating.
While he was not a successful starting quarterback for the Tennessee Titans prior to his trade to the Packers following training camp last season, Willis’ performance in 2024 has made him an intriguing name in multiple trade scenarios ever since Green Bay’s season ended.
After all, there are multiple NFL teams that are in need of a quarterback, and not all of them will be able to get one of the top talents in the 2025 draft. As such, Willis’ name has been listed as a possible trade target of these teams, who may hope that he builds off of his success with Matt LaFleur‘s Packers.
The Green Bay Packers Are Unlikely to Trade Malik Willis
Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst decided to go out and get Willis from the Titans after Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt both performed poorly in training camp and the Packers’ preseason games. It may have been a move that ended up saving Green Bay’s regular season.
The Packers finished the 2024 NFL campaign 11-6, which was an improvement over their 9-8 finish in 2023, but was only good enough for the seventh seed in the NFC. Had they lost any of the games in which Love was out, they would have missed the postseason.
Due to this, Sterling Bennett of Heavy on Packers writes that it is “unlikely the Green Bay Packers are willing to move Malik Willis.”
While it is true that the Packers could likely get a high draft pick in return for Willis, the fact of the matter is that they do not currently have another quarterback that they would feel comfortable with serving as Love’s backup. They brought Clifford back onto their practice squad, but his release following training camp proved they do not view him as a capable backup option.
Unless they somehow stumble upon a different quarterback who can be just as good as Willis was in 2024, they will be retaining him for 2025.
