Virgil van Dijk moved to clarify that he has “no idea” whether he will stay at Liverpool beyond this season or leave as a free agent.

The Reds’ captain is now able to speak to foreign clubs regarding a pre-contractual agreement, with his current deal at Anfield expiring this summer.

The Dutchman has consistently said during the campaign that talks on a new contract have not reached a breakthrough, though recent whispers on social media claimed that both he and Mohamed Salah had agreed on extensions.

Van Dijk put those rumours to bed, however, directly telling Sky Sports: “The only thing I’m focusing on is the game ahead of me, and I’m feeling good.

“I think everyone can see that, and what the future brings, at the moment, I’ve got no idea. So anyone who says they know it, they are absolutely wrong. But we’ll see what happens.”

Van Dijk scored Liverpool’s fourth goal in a 4-0 win over Tottenham to overturn their Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg deficit, setting up a Wembley clash with Newcastle next month.

The 33-year-old will have alarm bells ringing once more after a dominant performance against Spurs, putting the cherry on top of the cake when he rose highest to nod home Alexis Mac Allister’s corner.

Losing their leader for free this summer would be a huge blow, with no significant update seemingly imminent, as Van Dijk prepares to lead Liverpool at Wembley again.

“I will lead the boys in the best possible way,” he added. “I’m always proud to be leading out the boys. These occasions are obviously special and we’re really looking forward to it.

“When the time is there, we will be ready. It will be a difficult game, but any game that we play at the moment is difficult. We have to keep going and let’s see what it brings.

“It sounds very good. We’re really looking forward to it. It was always going to be difficult today. But we did very well. I’m proud of the boys and now we focus on the FA Cup.”

Van Dijk has taken a different public approach to Salah when discussing the prospect of a new contract, playing down talk, while the Egyptian has laid his frustrations bare.

Meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future remains just as up in the air, as Real Madrid continue to circle over a summer free transfer.

There are only a few months remaining for Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards to tie them down to new contracts, with another worrying admission made by Van Dijk that extending his time at Anfield may not happen.

Trent Alexаnder-Arnold’ѕ trаnѕfer fee ѕhocker

Jamie Carragher predicted Trent Alexander-Arnold’s transfer fee would be around £10 million — and against all odds, that’s exactly what it turned out to be. While pundits like Gary Neville and Micah Richards laughed off the idea, dismissing the valuation as far too low for such a talent, the final figure proved Carragher’s insight dead-on. Now, as the deal is sealed and the transfer fee confirmed, those who doubted him are left eating their words. It’s a classic case of who’s really laughing last — and it’s Carra standing tall with his sharp eye for football’s true value.
