Cooper Kupp made it publicly known Monday night that the Los Angeles Rams intend to trade him this offseason.
And immediately after that, the New England Patriots should have been on the phone with Rams general manager Les Snead.
It certainly won’t be easy for the Patriots to acquire Kupp since he figures to be a sought-after trade target. But New England is among the favorites to land the veteran wide receiver, according to DraftKings Sportsbook.
What exactly would it take to obtain Kupp? It shouldn’t take a massive haul to get a deal done.
Kupp will be 32 by the time next season rolls around and has an injury history. Plus, he had declined production this past season. Some draft capital realistically gets the job done in trading for Kupp.
Patriots Get: Kupp, 2025 sixth-round pick
Rams Get: 2025 fourth-round pick, 2026 fourth-round pick
This might be a little bit of an overpay for the Patriots, but they might have no choice if they want to beat out the competition for Kupp.
They also get to recoup a draft pick in return. Kupp would instantly become New England’s top receiving option for Drake Maye. Kupp’s 2024 campaign in which he compiled 67 receptions for 710 yards and six touchdowns — considered a down year for the eight-year veteran — would have led the Patriots in all three categories.
And considering the Patriots got nothing out of 2024 fourth-round pick Javon Baker this season and have failed in the fourth round in recent years by drafting Chad Ryland, Pierre Strong and Jake Andrews, perhaps they won’t mind parting with a couple of those selections.
Patriots Get: Kupp, 2026 fifth-round pick
Rams Get: 2025 third-round pick, 2026 sixth-round pick
This deal is similar to the one above, but the two picks the Rams are getting are ones the Patriots didn’t have within their possession when training camp opened up in August.
The 2025 third-round pick is the selection the Patriots received in the Matthew Judon trade with the Atlanta Falcons. Giving that pick to the Rams would be a steep price to pay but it definitely would catch their attention.
The 2026 sixth-round pick for the Patriots is the one they got from the Kansas City Chiefs in the mid-season deal of Joshua Uche. That one would be much easier to part with. So, the Patriots would essentially get Kupp for Judon and Uche. Not great, but not bad, either.
Patriots Get: Kupp
Rams Get: Kyle Dugger
Forget the draft picks and do an old-fashioned player-for-play swap. Dugger has always left something to be desired since Bill Belichick drafted him in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. And that was especially true this past season when he recorded 81 tackles and just four passes defended, albeit while battling an ankle injury.
Dugger’s tackling ability really isn’t the problem, it’s his ability to cover tight ends and receivers. He allowed quarterbacks to complete 76.1% of passes when they targeted Dugger this past season. That’s not nearly good enough in a pass-happy league.
Dugger is a solid player, but overrated and one the Patriots should be able to replace either in free agency or through the draft. And trading Dugger would help the Patriots get out of the four-year, $58 million contract extension they gave him last April.
