WHAT ARE THE ODDS? 6 Dream Free Agent Signings for Packers in 2025 NFL Offseason

Chicago Bears v Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers enter the 2025 NFL offseason with the singular goal of transforming from a good team into something truly great.

While last season’s successes and failures provided plenty of fodder for debate, one thing is clear: to take the next step, the Packers must look beyond the confines of the draft and make some bold moves in free agency.

General manager Brian Gutekunst, who isn’t shy about mixing it up in the free-agent pool, has already sent a message by signing Xavier McKinney and Josh Jacobs last year. Now, the stage is set for another potential blockbuster signing that could define the team’s trajectory in the coming years.

6. Drew Dahlman, Center

One of the key areas under the microscope is the interior of the offensive line, a unit that has seen steady production but now requires an infusion of youth and athleticism. With Josh Myers set to become an unrestricted free agent, it might be time for the Packers to say goodbye to a player who, while serviceable over his four-year tenure, never quite broke out as a true standout.

In 2024, Pro Football Focus ranked Myers as the 38th best center among 40 qualified players—a ranking that hardly justifies a long-term commitment, especially when the cap space and the pursuit of an upgrade are on the line.

This is where Drew Dahlman comes into play.

At just 26 years old, Dahlman has already emerged as one of the best run-blocking centers in the NFL. His technique, coupled with his athletic ability, makes him an ideal candidate to be the new anchor in the middle of the Packers’ offensive line.

While Green Bay certainly has options to address the center position internally—potentially moving Elgton Jenkins, Sean Rhyan, or even Zach Tom into the role and sliding 2024 first-rounder Jordan Morgan into a starting spot—the free-agent market has presented a compelling alternative in Dahlman.

5. D.J. Reed, Cornerback

Gutekunst is about to put his fingerprints all over the Packers’ cornerback room. Through roster cuts, free agency, the draft, and maybe even a trade, this unit will look completely different when Green Bay takes the field in 2025. And that’s probably for the best.

The biggest domino, of course, is Jaire Alexander.

The Packers will have to make a decision on his contract, and that decision likely ends with him no longer wearing green and gold.

When healthy, Alexander is one of the best cornerbacks in football. The problem is he hasn’t been healthy nearly enough. Three of the last four seasons have been marred by injuries, and that’s hard to justify at his massive price tag. Cutting or trading him would clear cap space, but it would also leave a huge void at CB1.

Keisean Nixon believes he’s that guy. The tape says otherwise. Nixon played well in coverage last season, but he’s better suited as a CB2 or slot corner rather than a true lockdown defender.

Green Bay will need to find someone who can handle the league’s top receivers, and the best option on the free-agent market is D.J. Reed.

Reed had a bit of a down season in 2024, but his track record suggests he’s still a very good cover guy. He’s aggressive, physical, and capable of shadowing top receivers.

The real question is whether Gutekunst believes Reed still has his best football ahead of him. That’s typically the type of player he targets in free agency. If he thinks Reed has another level, Green Bay could be making a serious push for him in March.

4. Khalil Mack, Defensive End

Gutekunst doesn’t typically chase aging veterans in free agency. He prefers to sign players whose best football is still ahead of them. Khalil Mack does not fit that mold. And yet, if there were ever a time for an exception, this might be it.

Mack isn’t the same force of nature he was in his prime, but even at 33 (he’ll turn 34 before next season starts), he remains one of the best defensive ends on the market.

The guy just keeps producing. In 2023, he turned back the clock and racked up a career-high 17 sacks, proving he still had plenty left in the tank. He followed that up with a solid, if less flashy, six sacks in 2024. Even as his physical tools decline, his pass-rushing instincts and technique remain elite.

But Mack is more than just a sack artist. His run defense is still rock solid. He knows how to set the edge, shed blocks, and make life miserable for running backs trying to get outside. He’s not just a situational pass rusher—he’s an every-down disruptor.

Green Bay’s defensive line needs help. Rashan Gary had an underwhelming season despite making the Pro Bowl. Kenny Clark was a non-factor for large stretches. The entire unit struggled with consistency. The Packers need an injection of physicality and reliability up front, and Mack could provide just that.

They’ve gone down this road before. Back in 2014, Green Bay signed an aging Julius Peppers, and he gave them three strong seasons as a veteran pass rusher. Mack could have a similar impact—a short-term addition who gives this defense exactly what it needs. If the price is right, the Packers should at least make the call.

3. Chris Godwin, Wide Receiver

Few position groups in Green Bay were more frustrating than wide receiver in 2024.

The Packers entered the season with a quartet of young, talented receivers—Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, and Dontayvion Wicks—who were all expected to take a significant leap forward.

Instead, none of them did. The flashes were there, but inconsistency, injuries, and drops turned what should have been a position of strength into a liability.

Now, the situation is even more uncertain. Watson tore his ACL in the season finale and will miss a chunk of the 2025 season. Doubs suffered a serious concussion in the playoffs—his second in a month—raising concerns about his long-term health.

Reed and Wicks had promising moments, but both struggled with drops at key times. Jordan Love needs more stability in his receiving corps.

That’s where Chris Godwin comes in.

Godwin is the second-best wide receiver available in free agency, behind only Tee Higgins. More importantly, he’s the exact type of reliable target the Packers need.

In seven of his eight NFL seasons, he’s posted a drop rate under six percent. In 2024, he didn’t drop a single pass before his season ended after seven games due to a dislocated ankle. When healthy, he’s one of the best possession receivers in football.

The Packers will need to be careful not to overpay. Godwin turns 29 before next season, and there are questions about whether he can be a true WR1. But his route running, hands, and veteran presence would add an element this offense desperately lacked last season.

If the price is right, he’s exactly the type of receiver who can elevate Love and the Packers’ passing attack.

2. Josh Sweat, Defensive End

Josh Sweat isn’t the biggest name on the market. He’s never posted a monster sack season like Khalil Mack, and he hasn’t been the headliner of a dominant pass rush. But he is exactly the kind of well-rounded, high-upside player the Packers need to add to their defensive front. And he also seems to already be planning his Eagles exit.

Green Bay’s pass rush was too inconsistent in 2024. Some weeks, they looked unstoppable. Other weeks, they couldn’t get anywhere near the quarterback.

Rashan Gary remains a key piece, but he needs help. Lukas Van Ness showed flashes, but he’s not ready for a full-time role yet. And Kenny Clark, once a force in the middle, disappeared for long stretches. Adding a player like Sweat would immediately raise the floor—and the ceiling—of this group.

Sweat isn’t just a sack artist, though his eight sacks last year were the second-highest total of his career. He’s a disruptor. He consistently puts pressure on quarterbacks, forcing them into bad decisions even when he’s not getting them on the ground.

Over the past three seasons, he’s totaled 25.5 sacks and logged at least 25 pressures in three of the last four years. That’s the kind of reliability Green Bay needs on the edge.

At 27, he’s still in his prime and has multiple productive years ahead of him. If the Packers are serious about taking their pass rush to another level, Sweat is a player worth targeting.

1. Tee Higgins, Wide Receiver

I have no idea if this is realistic, but let’s be clear—Tee Higgins is the dream free-agent target for the Packers.

He’s not just the best wide receiver available this offseason. He’s arguably the best free agent, period. He checks every box Green Bay needs to fill: size, experience, hands, and the ability to create separation. And at 26, he still has his best football ahead of him.

The biggest question surrounding Higgins isn’t talent. It’s whether he can be a true WR1. He’s spent his entire career playing alongside Ja’Marr Chase, so he’s never had to carry the burden of being the guy in an offense. That’s a fair concern for a player who will likely command a contract north of $22-25 million per year. But for the Packers, that might not be a deal-breaker.

Green Bay wouldn’t be asking Higgins to do it alone. They already have a deep, talented (if inconsistent) group of young receivers. Adding Higgins to the mix wouldn’t just elevate the passing game—it would make life easier for Jordan Love by giving him a true go-to target in big moments.

Higgins put up 73 catches, 911 yards, and 10 touchdowns last season—in just 12 games. If he stays healthy (which has been a question mark), he has 1,200-yard, double-digit touchdown potential in an offense like Green Bay’s.

Gutekunst has a type when it comes to free agents. He prefers players who are still ascending, not those whose best years are behind them. Higgins fits that mold perfectly.

The question is whether the Packers are willing to go all-in and pay what it takes to land him. If they truly want to push their Super Bowl window open, they should at least make an offer.
