The Egyptian winger joined the club in 2017 and has spent the last seven and a half years plundering goals and assists for Liverpool but this historic partnership is potentially nearing its end.
This isn’t fear-mongering journalism either. Liverpool are at risk of losing the 32-year-old attacker for free in July. They are at an impasse in negotiations with the sticking point seemingly that Salah’s demands are above what FSG are willing to give him.
It is more complicated than that, of course, given that Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are also in the last four months of their contracts. But that’s another criticism for the club to answer and not Salah’s fault.
James Pearce reports on where things are headed in negotiations between Mohamed Salah and FSG
James Pearce reports for the Athletic that Liverpool and Mohamed Salah are likely stuck at an impasse with little to change from what the club is prepared to offer.
“Discussions over an extension are ongoing,” Pearce writes. “Liverpool want to keep him beyond his 33rd birthday in June but the financial package has to make sense for the club’s long-term interests.
“Increasingly, it seems Salah will be faced with a straight choice between signing a new deal at Anfield or heading for a club in the Saudi Pro League.
“Al Hilal would love to have him on board before the Club World Cup in June.
“If it comes down to money then the most likely outcome is that a new chapter in Saudi Arabia beckons because Liverpool will not be able to compete with the wages on offer there.”
Liverpool losing Mohamed Salah to a dispute over wages would be an embarrassing affair
Right now, it’s pretty difficult to make an argument for any player but Salah being the best player in the world this season. At the time of writing, the 32-year-old has 25 goals and 17 assists in 33 appearances and these figures will balloon within weeks of publishing.
Liverpool are in such a good place despite losing Jurgen Klopp but it would be ridiculous to expect Arne Slot to continue working miracles if the club then also lost Mohamed Salah AND potentially Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold as well.
FSG need to consider the long-term effect that not completing these contract renewals will have on the club because it seems easy to tell from the outside that failure to get it done will have catatonic consequences for the club.
