Mike Vrabel has been busy filling at his staff as he prepares for his first year as coach of the New England Patriots.
But there’s still some holes to fill.
Mike Vrabel Joins Patriots as Team’s Next Head Coach
The Patriots still need a wide receivers coach, and old friend Wes Welker could be on New England’s radar. League sources told ESPN’s Mike Reiss that Welker is “among the options the Patriots have considered.”
Welker has plenty of connections to the Patriots. He spent six seasons with the team and while the former wide receiver never won a Super Bowl, he helped New England reach two of them during his tenure.
Welker began his coaching career with the Houston Texans when Vrabel was their defensive coordinator and ex-Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien was the head coach.
While Welker played with the Patriots, Josh McDaniels was on the staff. So there’s plenty of familiarity should they elect to bring Welker on board.
Welker had been with the Miami Dolphins since 2022, but was fired in January after a disappointing 8-9 season.
