BREAKING: Steelers could be diabolical and sign failed Giants QB this offseason

New York Giants v Pittsburgh Steelers
Downgrading from Justin Fields to Daniel Jones as the Steelers backup quarterback would be awful.

In case you haven’t heard the news yet, the New York Giants are one of the worst teams in the NFL for another year. Their once Super Bowl-contending teams led by Eli Manning are long gone. They have become a poorly run franchise and it looks like they are starting to move people out of the building. They just cut their starting quarterback Daniel Jones and refuse to play his backup for financial reasons.

He might be the scapegoat right now to hopefully pull some wins out of a hat to end the season, but New York will be letting plenty of employees go this offseason. He won’t be joining Pittsburgh at the moment. Jones would be better off trying to sign somewhere he could start a few games to get some extra money come this offseason. The Steelers could be players for him in free agency.

Many thought Jones had big upside coming out of college. He was a big guy who had some mobility to his game. He has shown spurts of progress throughout his career, but he has significantly declined over the past couple of years.

Jone was recently cut by the Giants and his free agency market will be interesting to watch. With Russell Wilson still in play for the Steelers starter next year, maybe their backup is obvious.

Steelers signing Daniel Jones might cause a vengeful riot in Pittsburgh

We will see how Wilson plays the rest of the way for Pittsburgh before they re-sign him. All signs seem to point to him currently on track to make that next contract a reality before he becomes a free agent himself. Justin Fields is also a pending free agent, so that is another problem for the Steelers to overcome. It seems probable that Fields will sign with another team in the upcoming offseason.

Kyle Allen is also a pending free agent for the Steelers, but they could always bring him back for cheap. That would still leave a spot open at the quarterback position even if they re-sign Wilson and let Fields walk in free agency. Attacking that need in the draft to try and develop a guy behind Wilson would probably be the best choice, but they could always look at free agency to fill that hole.

Jones could be that option and both the defunct former Giants quarterback and the Steelers have already been connected. According to ESPN’s Ben Solak, he could see a potential connection between the two this offseason. It could make sense for both sides as Jones tries to find stability in his rocky career, while he also tries to find a landing spot where he could start some games next year.

Solak stated, “I’m also keeping my eyes on the Steelers (current running favorite), Titans and Browns.”

It would make a lot of sense for the black and gold if they targeted Jones in free agency. He should come at a reasonable price, he remains on the younger side, and Mike Tomlin loves to add former first-round picks. He might not be as exciting as adding Fields was this past offseason, but Jones wouldn’t be the worst backup. He might not fit in Arthur Smith’s offense perfectly either. Jones would be a downgrade over Fields though.
