The Houston Astros appeared to gain momentum in the Alex Bregman sweepstakes, but an MLB insider isn’t counting out the Boston Red Sox.

General manager Dana Brown confirmed Houston’s desire to retain Bregman. The Astros reportedly have their six-year, $156 million offer still on the table, and there is one other team with a six-year offer, too. The Red Sox reportedly aren’t there on years, but they’ve been heavily linked to the All-Star, and manager Alex Cora praised the 30-year-old multiple times amid his side’s chase for him.

Despite recent Astros reports, Boston’s chancs to sign Bregman didn’t seem to dwindle.

“While it seems almost inevitable that 1B Pete Alonso returns to the Mets, the Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox loom as co-favorites for 3B Alex Bregman with no movement in Astros talks,” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale posted on X on Friday.

The top MLB insider also posted a column where he stated he expected a resolution between the Astros and Bregman soon. The two-time World Series champion reportedly does want to return to Houston but isn’t a fan of its offer as it would be a step down in salary.

Houston viewed Jorge Polanco as a “contingency” for Bregman but that option was removed when the Seattle Mariners re-signed the All-Star infielder.

Detroit reportedly viewed Bregman as its “top priority” and continued to make moves to bolster its roster.

It’s unknown how these moves will factor into Bregman’s decision, but the Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs are also contenders to sign the Gold Glove infielder along with the Red Sox.
