The Green Bay Packers fired their defensive line coach, Aaron Rebrovich, this offseason. Rebrovich was a holdover from Joe Barry’s staff, working under Barry as a 3-4 outside linebackers coach before transitioning to the entire 4-3 defensive line in 2024.
Since Rebrovich was canned, the Packers have reportedly interviewed three defensive line coaches for their vacancy: Kacy Rodgers, Aaron Whitecotton and Eric Washington. Two of those candidates have now signed with other teams in the NFC.
Last week, Rodgers signed on with the NFC North-winning Detroit Lions, who had to replace their line coach after Terrell Williams left to sign on as the defensive coordinator of the New England Patriots. According to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, Whitecotton has now signed with the Dallas Cowboys.
This is a bit of a gut punch to me. Whitecotton’s resume was very impressive, as he turned several first-round picks into Pro Bowlers in his time with the New York Jets and also got players like John Franklin-Myers and Bryce Huff, a waiver pick-up and an undrafted free agent, to play like eight-figure pass-rushers.
This leaves us with only Washington as the known interview that is still available for the Packers. Washington has been a defensive line coach with the Chicago Bears (2010), Carolina Panthers (2011-2017) and Buffalo Bills (2020-2023). He was also the defensive coordinator for the Panthers (2018-2019) and Bears (2024). With the Bills, he had modified titles on top of defensive line coach, including senior defensive assistant (2022) and assistant head coach (2023).
Washington previously worked under former Bears head coach Matt Eberflus, who is now the defensive coordinator of the same Cowboys who hired Whitecotton — which is a bit of a surprise. It’s possible that Washington has been the Packers’ guy all along, but the options are starting to thin out for the team.
It’s not like Green Bay hasn’t made any coaching staff hires this offseason, either. Former quarterbacks coach Luke Getsy has been brought back as a “senior offensive assistant” while special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia received an extension. Meanwhile, the Packers are still looking for a defensive line coach and a quarterbacks coach. On top of that, they could be on the search for a new linebackers coach, too, as Anthony Campanile has interviewed with the Jacksonville Jaguars for their defensive coordinator opening. A source told me this week that the belief is that Campanile is the leader to get that job.
