2025 South Side Sox Top Prospect No. 52: Abraham Núñez

His Stateside debut didn’t overwhelm, but he’s still a star prospect plying his trade in the low minors

Abraham Núñez was a Jan. 15, 2023 signing out of the Dominican Republic as a 17-year-old, and he’s had a lot of success in the White Sox organization since then.

The son of former Royal and Marlin, Abraham Sr., Junior posted a .299/.427/.442 line in his DSL debut along with a .869 wOBA and a 136 wRC+. As that swollen on-base percentage suggests, his plate discipline numbers were also stout: Núñez walked in just fewer than 18% of his 185 PAs while striking out in just 12%. He did have a 70% contact rate and a SwStr% of 17%, so he didn’t go without whiffs, it just appears that Núñez was apt at putting the ball in play with two strikes. The lefty featured some pull-side pop as well with a line drive rate at 26%. Núñez also stole 12 bags and played 43 games in the outfield (32 in center field) without making an error.

One year later, it was a matter of still good so far, as Núñez logs a similar speedy profile as ascendant star ACL teammate Javier Mogollón — but without any of Mogollón’s homer power. Seriously, a slugging percentage in 2024 worse than .400 and worse than your on-base demands some serious time in the weight room.

But there’s time: Núñez was very, very young for an ACL participant, and did so, so many things well. Starting with the leather, Núñez played almost flawlessly at a challenging defensive position, center field. The arm will keep him in center, or even left, but his wheels should keep him on the field: a team-best 20 steals (but nine times caught, time for base-stealing drills, A.N.!) A career stolen base success rate of just 66.7% despite oodles of triples and a strong defensive range factor, is a clear indication that this young fella needs some serious basepath tutoring, so c’mon Sox, get it done.

Núñez’s Baseball Cube player ratings
Hitting 89 (+1 from last season)
Speed 82 (+6)
Contact 80 (-16)
RBIs 56 (-28)
Durability 44 (0)
Runs 34 (+2)
Power 31 (-14)
XBH 26 (-14)
Average 55.25 (-10.61)

Based on his buff debut at 17 in the DSL, it’s arguable Núñez disappointed slightly Stateside in 2024. But there’s still reason for optimism as he re-sets and strikes out on a full season of pro ball next year, at Kannapolis.
