Giants Linked To $60 Million Red Sox Pitcher In Shocking Free Agency Move

The Boston Red Sox made two huge additions to the starting rotation when they swung a trade for Garrett Crochet and signed Walker Buehler.

ST PETERSBURG, FLORIDA - SEPTEMBER 17: Nick Pivetta #37 of the Boston Red Sox throws a pitch during the first inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field on September 17, 2024 in St Petersburg, Florida.

After these two additions, it seemed pretty clear Boston was looking to move on from starting pitcher Nick Pivetta. But that doesn’t mean Pivetta doesn’t have a market of his own.

Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller recently suggested the San Francisco Giants would be one of the top landing spots for Pivetta. Spotrac projects the righty to sign for $60 million this winter, which is well within San Francisco’s price range.

“In what feels like a game of ‘One of these things is not like the other,’ the three players who rejected qualifying offers and still haven’t signed contracts are Pete Alonso, Alex Bregman…and Nick Pivetta,” Miller wrote. “He provided a decent amount of value to the Red Sox over the past four seasons, logging at least 140 innings pitched in each, with an ERA ranging from 4.04 to 4.56.

“Was it enough for the almost 32-year-old to get a three-year or a four-year deal on the open market? Thus far, apparently not. And the longer that he lingers in free agency, the more likely it is that he settles for one of those ‘one year plus a player option’ deals that have been all the rage in recent years. We all know San Francisco loves those.”

The Giants were closely connected to Corbin Burnes before he signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks, so we know San Francisco is looking to add pitching.

Jack Flaherty would be the dream addition at this point, but if they whiff on Flaherty too, Pivetta could be the next pivot after that.
