The Pittsburgh Steelers could have a reunion with an old friend to help with part of their sticky quarterback situation. Gerry Dulac, Steelers insider from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, threw out quarterback Mason Rudolph as a possible option for the backup quarterback position if the team decides to bring Justin Fields back.
Rudolph is a free agent after playing the season in Tennessee with the Titans and starting five games and playing in eight due to the struggles of quarterback Will Levis. He finished with 1530 passing yards nine touchdowns and nine interceptions.
“The best addition would be Daniel Jones, the former New York Giants quarterback. And would the Steelers consider another reunion with Mason Rudolph,” Dulac wrote.
Dulac has hinted since the season’s end the Steelers’ likely plan is to bring back Fields and make him the starter while bringing in a veteran backup who can provide security if Fields gets hurt.
Rudolph had been with the Steelers for six seasons before he left to head to the Titans. His 3-0 stretch to push the Steelers into the playoffs to end the 2023 season highlights one of the most prolific stretches of offense the Steelers have had in the 2020s.
His return could be one of security, where the Steelers know how he would respond to things and provide fine depth behind Fields.
